About of SOH
History of SoH
In 1990 Mr. Wim Bakker, a Dutch man moved by the poor children missing the opportunity going to school, he set up a small classroom in his own garage only with 16 students with the help of a Bangladeshi Teacher at Banani Road 35 (firstly called Bakker’s Bamboo School). Later in 1993 Mr Chitta Halder became the head and named School of Hope, shifted to beside Banani Graveyard and the students started increasing from 25 to now 250. In 2000 SoH shifted to Vatara. In 2014 SoH was brought under Vattara Hope Foundation to run its charity education properly.
“ The school has come such a long long way from the little bamboo shack in the squatter camp next to the Gulshan mosque, our company guesthouse where I stayed when from time to time I had to go to Dhaka for business. For working at a development project of the EEC in Rangpur, but occasionally I had to go to Dhaka and in the evenings I often strolled into the squatter camp for a chat with the friendly squatters, mostly abandoned women and their children living in make shifts of the plastic sheets. One day I was asked by an old squatter if I could help him start a school. I said yes and the little bamboo school with sixteen kiddies was started. A real miracle!” – Mr. Wim Bakker.

Message From Board, School of Hope
The opportunity to facilitate education to other’s children is a rare privilege – especially when those children may not have other means to attain education. The Board of School of Hope feels an enormous sense of honor and responsibility to be involved in educating economically and socially underprivileged children in Dhaka. At School of Hope we take this considerable responsibility earnestly as we aim to prepare young kids for their adult lives by building the building blocks of future learning whether at classrooms or in the university of life.
We see School of Hope as a dream factory; where our teachers work assiduously to broaden the minds of our students and inspire them to dream big. We take pride in instilling the values that not only allow them to dream big but make them relentlessly driven to materialize those dreams.
At school of Hope we appreciate the age-old adage – ‘it is nice to be important, but more important to be nice’. Development of the character of our students is as important as is the examination grades. To do this we aim to create an environment that fosters integrity, promote tolerance, and encourage teamwork so that out students get prepared to make a telling contribution to their wider community.
The operation of School of Hope is heavily reliant on the generous contribution made by our donors, whether individual or corporate. The board remains infinitely indebted to them for their generous contribution. With their continued support we remain committed to provide the best academic environment for our students that ignite their intellectual curiosities whilst ensuring that they grow as forward-thinking individuals.
